North Shore Picks of the Weekend, February 10-13

No surprise, this weekend is full of events that concern love, and not just the romantic kind.  Area actors, naturalists, and bakers offer up great big sticky Valentines for people who love their children, friends, and parents.  There’s even something on tap for people who love bald eagles and whoopie pies.  Check these out:

The Exceptionals by Bob Clyman

How far will a mother go to ensure that her child has every possible opportunity to be exceptional?  In Clyman’s play, two mothers must make difficult decisions regarding uniquely gifted children.  Clyman is the recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.  Show runs from 2/10/2011 – 3/6/2011

Love Letters by A. R. Gurney

The play follows 50 years of letters sent back and forth between childhood friends, Andrew and Melissa.  As the two go on to lead separate lives, the letters chronicle the triumphs and travails of childhood through middle age.  “Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1990, A. R. Gurney’s words remain as more than a love story — they are a tribute to writing itself.”  Show runs from 2/12-2/13/2011.

Sunfish by Hyeyoung Kim and Michael Cooper

A young girl sacrifices everything to find a miraculous cure and save her father’s failing eyesight.  Sunfish is a musical based on a traditional Korean folktale.  Show runs from 2/10-27/2011, and on Sunday February 13, there will be an educational discussion of the play following the matinee performance.

Merrimack River Bald Eagle Festival, Saturday February 12

Celebrate the seasonal return of bald eagles to the Merrimack Valley with the sixth annual Merrimack River Eagle Festival! In the deep winter of February, when everything else is frozen and asleep, the Newburyport area along the river is alive with the spectacular sight of wintering bald eagles flying, fishing, and sitting in the sun.  Family events are held between 8:30 and 4:00 at the Joppa Flats Education Center or Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, and are free to all.

Valentine’s Wine and Whoopie Pie Tasting

Yes, I wrote wine and whoopie pies.  Until an email announcement from the wine store arrived in my inbox this morning, I thought I had heard/seen/sampled all.  I guess I was wrong.  On Saturday the 12th from 4-7 pm, Leary’s Fine Wines and Chococoa Baking Company of Newburyport team up to pair wines with the bakery’s acclaimed whoopies.  Sample chocolate varieties with wines such as Trentadue Red Dessert Wine and a 2007 Chocolate Box Shiraz.

Leary’s is located at 202 Merrimac Street in Newburyport.  For more information about the tasting, call 978-462-4451.
