North Shore Picks of the Weekend, 1/28-1/30
I’ll be exploring a bit of the Boston music scene early on in the weekend, but can’t wait to get back and enjoy some of the arts in my own back yard. There’s lots happening on the North Shore this weekend:

Since 2002 The Firehouse Center for the Arts and the New Works Festival have fostered the development of New England writers, directors, and actors. Providing insight on the play writing process from conception to presentation, this festival allows us to share with the community a rare and special look at the abundant talent that surrounds us. Submitted plays are judged by an independent panel of theater professionals in blind readings. This year’s panel consisted of seven members of the theatrical community.

PRIMAL POLYPHONY, The Actors Studio, 50 Water Street (The Tannery), Newburyport
The Renaissance a capella Vocal Trio
Visit the Actors Studio on Sunday, January 30 at 3 pm for an afternoon of a capella music. The Renaissance a capella vocal trio includes Wilhelmina Bradley, soprano; Annie Philips, mezzo-soprano and Charles Bradley, tenor. They have performed throughout New England and the East Coast, from Boston to Philadelphia, New Hampshire to Vermont and western Massachusetts. The trio perform early European music.
Admission is $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Primal Polyphony will donate the entire proceeds from the concert back to the Actors Studio. For tickets, call 978-465-1229.
LOBBY ART EXHIBIT, Anna Jaques Hospital, 25 Highland Avenue, Newburyport
Spellman and Johnson, en plein air painters
A new artist exhibit opened Thursday, January 27 at Anna Jaques Hospital and runs through February 25. Sponsored by the Aid Association, the display is in the lobby of the hospital and features the works of Susan Spellman of Newburyport and Christine Molitor Johnson of Amesbury. The two women are plein air painters and they have studied together under Kevin Shea, of Newburyport, and marine painter Donald Demers, of Maine. The exhibit is a fundraiser for the hospital. There is no admission, but all paintings are for sale.
MUSICIANS OF THE OLD POST ROAD, Unitarian Church, 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport
Hidden Treasures from the German Baroque
Join the Musicians of the Old Post Road on Sunday, January 30, at 4 pm for an instrumental concert featuring music from the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic periods. The group has toured in Germany, Austria and Mexico and has appeared at festivals and in concert series throughout the country.
