North Shore Bloggers Consortium: Picks of the Weekend
This weekend it’s quality over quantity, featuring excellent literary opportunities and Amesbury’s 14th Annual Open Studios Tour, the absolute highlight of my list. I look forward to Open Studios weekend every fall. Here are my picks for the weekend of November 11-13, 2010:
A Celebration of Local Authors at The Book Rack, Newburyport
Visit Newburyport’s downtown bookshop, The Book Rack, on Thursday, November 11 at 6:00 pm for a celebration of local authors and their books. Several area authors will be on hand to talk about their books with store patrons. Books make excellent holiday gifts, you know, and this is the time to pick some good ones up for the people on your shopping list. I’ll bet the authors will even personalize and autograph books for you. Refreshments will be served!
The Book Rack is located at 52 State Street, Newburyport. For more information about the event, call 978-462-8615.
Powow River Poets, Poetry Reading Series at Jabberwocky Bookshop
The Powow River Poets Poetry Readings Series – now in its fifteenth year – is free and open to the public. Poetry enthusiasts are urged to attend. Past guest readers have featured such eminent poets as former NEA Chairman Dana Gioia, X.J. Kennedy, Alicia Stallings, David Ferry, Robert Shaw, and talented newcomers like recent Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize recipient Rose Kelleher. Saturday’s guests include Richard Hoffman and former poet laureate of Portsmouth, NH, Mimi White. During the event, a guest reader and a Powow member will read, after which the stage is turned over to the audience for open mic readings.
This month’s reading is scheduled for Saturday, November 13 at 3:00 p.m., at Jabberwocky Bookshop, 50 Water Street, in Newburyport. For more information call 978-465-9359.
Amesbury’s 14th Annual Open Studios Tour
On November 13 and 14, the Amesbury Cultural Council presents the 14th Annual Open Studios Tour. Throughout the weekend, the finest local artists open their studios to display and sell their work. It’s a great opportunity to support Amesbury’s local creative community and purchase one-of-a-kind works of art. Many of the studios also feature performance artists, and the Cultural Center also offers a children’s craft table and raffle featuring items from an assortment of Amesbury merchants, businesses and artists.
Your self-guided tour begins at the Amesbury Cultural Center located in the Upper Millyard in downtown Amesbury. See the brochure here for the exact location of the artists and performers participating in the 2010 Open Studio Tour. Hours are: Saturday 10 am – 4 pm; Sunday 12 noon – 4 pm.
